Minimising associated issues with calcium hypochlorite use at a swimming pool
About our work
At a community leisure centre in Argyll, AquaVantage technology was utilised to help overcome problems when using calcium hypochlorite (chlorine powder) in the centre’s 25-metre swimming pool.
The challenge
The man problem was calcium hypochlorite sediment forming in the dosing lines and then going into hard plug-like lumps at every bend, which was causing a number of issues.
These issues included pipe lines bursting, non-return valves failing, diaphragms in dosing pumps beginning to rupture, with chlorine unable to reach the pools, all due to increased pressure as a direct result of the blockages.
Our solution
The customer decided to fit one of our mid-range units – and were able to have this up and running within two hours of arrival.
In less than a week, blockages had dissolved, with chlorine being dosed in the normal way. The unit was kept in place for another six months before further results were collated. The results far exceeded the customer’s expectations.
Using AquaVantage technology, chlorine usage dropped by a half, equating to a saving of 60kg per month or 720kg per year.
Other noticeable improvements included:
› Pool heated up in less time
› Scum channels needed less cleaning, less often
› Filters required less back-washing, less often
› Scale deposits on the inside of pipes reduced significantly
› Bacteriological count began to lower, with the customer expecting this to be eventually eradicated
